Ministry of Foreign Affairs Publishes 137 Best Practices for Resolving Corporate Hardships at Overseas Diplomatic Missions... "Response to Trade Fraud, Customs, and Unpaid Bills"

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a casebook on the 28th to highlight the efforts of overseas diplomatic missions in supporting companies expanding abroad. This casebook carefully selected and contains 137 best practices where overseas diplomatic missions successfully resolved various hardships that occurred locally, including visa issuance delays, trade fraud, unpaid construction bills, and employee detention.

Looking at the major disclosed cases, in June 2025 in Burundi, trade fraud occurred during the import of 2,000 sacks of green coffee beans (worth $154,000). When the supplier sent weeds instead of the green beans and the local police demanded money under the pretext of arresting the culprit, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Rwanda immediately urged an investigation and cooperated. As a result, within a week, they achieved the outcome of luring the suspect, who was residing in Kenya, to Burundi and arresting them at the airport.

In Vietnam, local customs authorities attempted to levy a heavy import tax on a Korean small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) citing a product classification error. The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Ho Chi Minh City responded proactively, pointing out that the customs office's classification method was potentially in violation of international agreements, and ultimately succeeded in getting approximately 640 million won worth of customs duties and penalty surcharges canceled.

In Spain, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea resolved the issues of two Korean SMEs that were unable to receive approximately 1.57 billion won in payments from a local company. The embassy took swift measures, such as arranging a meeting between the head of the diplomatic mission and the chairman of the Spanish company, to support the full recovery of the unpaid bills.

In addition to this, other cases were included, such as ▲ the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, which supported the return of about 300 Korean workers detained by immigration authorities in Georgia, USA, in September of last year, and ▲ the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Iran, which assisted in the emergency evacuation of businesspeople following the outbreak of the war in Iran.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to continuously strengthen the corporate support capabilities of its overseas diplomatic missions in the future to fully support export and order-taking activities as well as settlement in local markets.
