On the 2nd, the final day of official campaigning for the June 3 local elections, the Democratic Party of Korea set out to win over voters in key battlegrounds at the last minute. The party leadership identified Seoul and Jeonbuk as representative 'decisive contests' and launched an all-out campaign effort. Both regions are considered strategic areas where a defeat would impose a significant burden on the party.
General Election Campaign Committee Chairperson Jeong Cheong-rae focused on support while managing schedules in Gangwon and Seoul. Chairperson Jeong campaigned in support of Gangwon Jeongseon County Mayor candidate Choi Seung-jun before moving to Yeongwol to continue campaigning alongside Gangwon Governor candidate Woo Sang-ho and Yeongwol County Mayor candidate Park Sun-gyu. Appealing for support for the Democratic Party's Number 1 candidates, he stated, "This is an election to empower President Lee Jae-myung." He also brought up former presidents Lee Myung-bak, Park Geun-hye, and Yoon Suk-yeol, saying, "Please pass judgment for the normalization of the country and a working local government." Previously, during a National Assembly press conference, he had also urged the public to "pass judgment" targeting the People Power Party. Chairperson Jeong is scheduled to wrap up his campaign at Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul as his final event of the day, where he is expected to emphasize his support for Seoul Mayor candidate Jeong Won-o and deliver a message calling for judgment on the city administration of People Power Party candidate Oh Se-hoon.
Co-Chairperson of the Election Campaign Committee Han Byung-do stayed in Jeonbuk, devoting his full efforts to supporting Jeonbuk Governor candidate Lee Won-taek. Chairperson Han visited the Iksan Senior Comprehensive Welfare Center, the Hyundai Motors Jeonju plant, the Wanju Innovation City, and the National Korea College of Agriculture and Fisheries to appeal for support. In the evening, he held a joint campaign rally with candidate Lee Won-taek and Jeonju Mayor candidate Cho Ji-hoon at Jeonju Pungnammun Square. During a National Assembly strategy meeting, Chairperson Han stated, "Please complete the success of the Lee Jae-myung administration with a single vote," adding, "I will maintain a humble attitude until the very end." Subsequently, at a press conference for the Jeonbuk Provincial Council, he emphasized, "If Lee Won-taek becomes governor, the Democratic Party will become a guaranteed check for the budget."
As candidate Lee Won-taek engaged in a tight race with independent candidate Kim Kwan-young in the party's home turf of Jeonbuk, the leadership successively stepped up to provide support. Analysts suggest this election also serves as an evaluation of the party leadership following the expulsion of candidate Kim Kwan-young. However, party leader Lee is reported to have visited Jeonbuk only once during the official campaign period.
