On the 12th, Angel Robotics announced that it has been selected as the lead agency for a national project under the 'Multi-Ministry Advanced Medical Device Research and Development Project' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This project involves a total budget of 23.547 billion won and aims to achieve the 'development and commercialization of a Brain-to-Robot full-stack system capable of motor-sensory synchronization.'
The core task is the development of an 'implantable brain-AI-robot real-time interlocking system' to restore the walking and manipulation functions of quadriplegic patients. Angel Robotics will serve as the lead agency for this project, which is managed by the Multi-Ministry Medical Device R&D Project Group, with the participation of a total of 10 institutions, including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the Seoul National University Industry Collaboration Foundation, and the Korea Testing Laboratory.
The project will run for approximately 6 years and 9 months, from April 1, 2026, to December 31, 2032. Of the total budget of 23.547 billion won, 20.25 billion won is funded by the government, and 3.32 billion won is covered by private investment. The government-funded R&D budget allocated to Angel Robotics is 6.99 billion won, with a private contribution of 2.33 billion won. The company's recent equity capital stands at 32.626 billion won, making the allocated government-funded R&D budget equivalent to 21.4% of its total equity.
Through this project, the company plans to integrate a bidirectional neural interface based on high-resolution intracortical electrodes with robot control technology that mimics human motor control layers. By simultaneously performing sensory encoding and intention decoding to control robots, the initiative aims to develop the world's first-of-its-kind bidirectional Brain-to-Robot technology.
Angel Robotics outlined the anticipated effects of this project, which include: ▲Fostering a new industrial ecosystem for Brain-to-Robot convergence, ▲Securing core technologies for integrated brain-robot control, ▲Proactively establishing regulatory guidelines for the implantable medical device sector, and ▲Internalizing high-reliability hardware technology to overcome the technical limitations of implantable medical devices.
Meanwhile, based on the project agreement signing date, both the occurrence date and the decision date fall on June 12, 2026. The company stated, "The project duration and budget may be changed through government policy adjustments and mutual agreement between the contracting parties."
