Gokseong in Jeollanam-do is a region impressively defined by the gently flowing Seomjingang River and the beautiful landscapes unfolding along its banks. Introducing five places to visit in Gokseong on a spring day, where the ambiance of old railway tracks, rich history, and uniquely themed spaces blend together to offer visitors a variety of experiences.
1. Seomjingang Train Village (Oji-ri, O gol-myeon) This is a train-themed tourist destination created by preserving the old Jeolla Line section, which became defunct due to the Jeolla Line double-tracking project in 1998. Here, you can ride a steam locomotive running along the Seomjingang River, feeling the river breeze while enjoying the scenery. In the space created by landscaping the grounds of the old Gokseong Station into a park, you can enjoy a rail bike experience riding on the tracks, as well as stroll through the central plaza and the rose garden. Well-maintained with pleasant facilities and a variety of experience programs, it is a particularly rewarding place for family visitors.
2. Seomjingang Dokkaebi Village (Hogok-ri, Godal-myeon) It is a theme park harmonized with nature, centered around goblin (Dokkaebi) tales. You can breathe in the fresh air along the forest walking trails or enjoy nature-friendly activities at the rope playground. Various colorful programs for children are prepared, including forest exploration, watching puppet shows, and reading picture books. With its beautiful surrounding scenery, it is great for photography, and it is a suitable place to spend a relaxing time in a friendly atmosphere.
3. Catholic Gokseong Church (Eupnae-ri, Gokseong-eup) The Catholic Gokseong Church, embracing the region's long history, is a place where believers fleeing the 1815 Eulhae Persecution began to settle. In particular, it was built in 1958 on the site of a prison during the 1827 Jeonghae Persecution, establishing itself as a space to reflect on the meaning of martyrdom. In a quiet and reverent atmosphere, you can face the painful history of Korean Catholicism and fall into deep contemplation.
4. Gokseong Leisure and Culture Center (Eupnae-ri, Gokseong-eup) It is a space that comprehensively supports the culture, lifelong learning, and leisure life of the county's residents. Various cultural performances are held in its two performance halls, the Dongak Art Hall and the Daehwang Hall, and a 'Encounter Space' is also prepared for free communication. It is equipped with physical training facilities such as a yoga room, fitness center, and outdoor multi-purpose sports field. Meanwhile, the Lifelong Learning Center operates education in various fields—including technology, skills, hobbies, and general education—as well as professional certification courses, contributing to improving the quality of life for local residents.
5. Gokseong Gihwadang Ttukbang Market (Eupnae-ri, Gokseong-eup) It is a unique market created along the banks of the Seomjingang River. You can find unique, handmade crafts and Gokseong's seasonal agricultural specialties. Producers and consumers communicate directly, creating a lively atmosphere, and it is full of various sights, enjoyments, and experiences. It offers the joy of feeling the local sentiment in a relaxed atmosphere and discovering cost-effective products.
