[Miryang Travel] 5 Recommended Places to Visit in Miryang, Where the Yeongnam Alps and a Thousand Years of History Breathe

Miryang, Gyeongnam is a city embracing the beautiful nature of the Yeongnam Alps, a long history stretching back to the Samhan era, and a diverse cultural heritage. The Miryang River, crossing the city, adds to its abundance, creating a perfect harmony of historical attractions and natural resting spaces. On a journey to Miryang, we introduce five noteworthy destinations to visit.

A Tranquil Temple Radiating Mystical Energy, 'Maneoksa' Located on the eight-tenths ridge of the 674-meter-high Maneok Mountain, Maneoksa is a historic temple said to have been founded by King Suro of the Silla Dynasty. Situated deep in the mountains of Yongjeon-ri, Samrangjin-eup, records remain of its miraculous efficacy when rain-making rituals were held during severe droughts. Legend has it that countless fish and dragons of the East Sea were moved by Buddhist teachings and turned into stone. In fact, striking the stones here produces a clear bell-like sound, leading to the presence of a ringing stone designated as a Gyeongnam Monument. It is a destination where visitors can experience the mystical sounds of nature amidst the tranquility of a deep mountain temple.

Traces of Public Education in the Joseon Dynasty, 'Miryang Hyanggyo' Located in Gyodong, Miryang Hyanggyo was an institution in charge of public education during the Joseon Dynasty, believed to have been first built around 1100. Its current appearance was brought about when Magistrate Choe Gi rebuilt it in 1602, and Magistrate Yi Hyeon-si repaired it in 1821, remaining to this day. Various buildings, including Daeseongjeon and Myeongnyundang, are arranged on the slope, and the spaces enshrining sages like Confucius, as well as the areas where Confucian scholars studied, are well preserved. Situated behind the Gyodong Village, which is densely populated with traditional houses, it creates a serene landscape in harmony with the surrounding scenery. It is relatively quiet, making it a great place for a leisurely stroll, and the historically significant buildings and surrounding gardens are systematically maintained.

The Gateway to Yeongnam and a Historical Site, 'Jagwongwanji' Located in Geomse-ri, Samrangjin-eup, Jagwongwanji was formerly an important transportation hub in the Yeongnam region. It is a historical space that served as lodging for traveling officials, a defense facility against Japanese invaders, and a checkpoint for controlling access to the ferry port. It was demolished during the Japanese colonial period due to the laying of railway tracks but was restored near its original location in 1995. A memorial tower also stands here, erected by Miryang Magistrate Park Jin during the Imjin War to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives fighting against the Japanese invaders. The banks of the Nakdong River outside the tunnel beneath the nearby railway tracks are part of the Nakdong River Bicycle Trans-Korea Route, making it an excellent space to feel nature alongside historical significance.

Embracing the Agricultural Heritage of the Samhan Era, 'Sosanje Historical Park' Established in Susan-ri, Hanam-eup, Sosanje Historical Park is a space that restored the Miryang Sosanje, one of the three major irrigation facilities of the Samhan era. Traces of sluice gates and other structures were discovered in 1986, and following a full-scale maintenance and restoration project starting in 2017, it was developed into a park in 2019. Equipped with experiential spaces to understand various plants and agriculture, it is utilized as a place for nature exploration. It is an ideal spot to take a walk along the traces of a long history and rest in nature.

The Coexistence of Forest Healing and Fine Dining, 'Tom's Farm' Located in Beopheung-ri, Danjang-myeon, Tom's Farm is a tourist farm and meat restaurant that provides a relaxing rest in the forest. Indoor and outdoor individual barbecue areas are available, allowing visitors to enjoy a camping atmosphere and taste barbecue using outdoor chef grills. The spacious grounds feature a play area for children, and in the summer, water play is possible in a pond maintained with clean groundwater. Surrounded by clean forest air and a valley, it is a great place to spend a relaxing time, and it also features a cafe where visitors can enjoy coffee while taking in the open, refreshing scenery. Visitors can taste various cuts of meat, and the facility maintains an overall neat appearance with careful attention to detail for its guests.
