People Power Party Retorts to Kim Kyung-soo's 'Deepfake Suspicion' as "Druking Season 2 Scheme"... Vows Legal Action

On the 1st, the People Power Party strongly refuted the claim by Democratic Party of Korea's South Gyeongsang gubernatorial candidate Kim Kyung-soo, who identified the camp of PPP candidate Park Wan-soo as the mastermind behind a deepfake video disparaging him, calling it "a deepfake scheme equivalent to Druking Season 2."

Co-Election Campaign Committee Chairman Song Eon-seok claimed via Facebook on the same day, "Candidate Kim, who was punished for the Druking comment manipulation scandal, is once again attempting scheming politics." He criticized the move, asking, "Which election camp would operate a dedicated deepfake team?" and calling it "behavior aimed at misleading public opinion by raising baseless suspicions right before the election."

Chairman Song pointed out, "The video in question was never posted on Candidate Park's official YouTube channel," calling it "an attempt to forcibly tie it to the Park Wan-soo camp." He added, "We will take legal action against the raising of these suspicions and hold those responsible accountable to the very end." He also urged, "Voters should strictly judge the figure who undermined democracy through comment manipulation."

Park Chung-kwon, head of the Central Election Campaign Committee's public relations team, also issued a commentary stating, "Candidate Kim was sentenced to two years in prison after the Supreme Court finalized his guilty verdict in the comment manipulation scandal," claiming, "This time, he is shaking up the election landscape with deepfake suspicions." He stated, "Using a video that does not exist on the official channel as a basis to tip off the media and even prompt an investigation request to the election commission is a negative offensive ahead of the election."

Team Leader Park further claimed, "Circumstances of a preliminary meeting between the informant and an official from Candidate Kim's side at the end of April were confirmed in SNS conversations," adding, "It includes mentions of offering money and promises to recommend civil servants at the South Gyeongsang provincial government office." He added, "This is similar to the method linked to a diplomatic mission official during the past Druking scandal." The People Power Party called for a thorough investigation into the spread of false facts, for which they have filed a complaint with the Changwon District Prosecutors' Office, and emphasized they would reveal the full truth behind the related suspicions.
