As the early voting rate for the June 3 local elections reached a record high, the ruling and opposition parties offered conflicting interpretations regarding the potential advantages and disadvantages. The Democratic Party of Korea expressed expectations, highlighting that high voter turnout in the past has been favorable to the progressive camp. Meanwhile, the People Power Party claimed that the results reflect public sentiment calling for judgment on the Lee Jae-myung administration.
[Democratic Party of Korea's Position] Rep. Jeong Cheong-rae, General Chairman of the Democratic Party's Election Campaign Committee, met with reporters after campaigning in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province on the 30th, stating, "Core voter demographics participated actively in early voting, and most of the people standing in line were young." He added, "If youth participation has increased, a high early voting rate is not disadvantageous for the Democratic Party." However, he added, "I agree with the view that as early voting becomes established, there is also a tendency reflected where people want to manage other schedules on the main election day."
Chief Spokesperson Kang Jun-hyun stated during a press conference at the National Assembly, "While it is difficult to determine the advantages or disadvantages solely based on the early voting rate, high early voting rates in local, presidential, and general elections have historically been encouraging for our party." He further noted, "This high voter rate is proof of the public's heightened interest in the local elections."
[People Power Party's Position] The People Power Party linked the rise in the early voting rate to a narrative of judging the administration. Election Campaign Headquarters Chief Jeong Hee-yong stated through a press release, "The high early voting rate is a public warning against arrogant power." He argued, "Anger over the president's attempt to cancel his trial, frustration over failed housing plans, and concerns over unverified candidates have translated into votes."
Park Sung-hoon, Public Relations Director for the Central Election Campaign Committee, also evaluated the situation, saying, "The voters' intention to judge the government's self-righteousness and arrogance and to protect their assets is being expressed."
Meanwhile, the People Power Party's Fair Election and Secure Voting Committee reported, "With the exception of the violation of the Public Official Election Act committed by President Lee Jae-myung on the 29th, the early voting proceeded smoothly overall without any major issues."
