Jeong Won-o: 'Mayor obsessed with partisan politics must be replaced'... Enters final all-out campaign push

On the 31st, three days ahead of the June 3 local elections, Democratic Party of Korea's Seoul mayoral candidate Jeong Won-o launched a final offensive to win over voters by advocating for a 'change of mayor,' sharply criticizing People Power Party candidate Oh Se-hoon as a 'mayor obsessed with partisan politics.'

During a campaign speech in front of the Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Candidate Jeong appealed for support regarding Oh's statement that he would attend Cabinet meetings to check the Lee Jae-myung administration if elected. 'If a mayor who repeatedly engages in obstruction and nitpicking continues to check the president in Cabinet meetings, running the country will become even more difficult,' Jeong said. He emphasized, 'I will make necessary requests and offer candid advice from the perspective of Seoul citizens, but fundamentally, I will work in step with the government to push things forward. That is the only way the Republic of Korea and Seoul can develop together.'

Meeting with reporters after the campaign, Candidate Jeong also pointed out, 'A remark about pouring out one's personal opinions at a Cabinet meeting is nothing short of a declaration of partisan politics. This will bring misfortune to the citizens of Seoul.' In response to Oh's criticism labeling him as 'a puppet chosen by President Lee Jae-myung,' Jeong hit back, calling him 'a figure who remained silent even during the tyranny of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.'

At a press conference at the National Assembly, General Election Campaign Headquarters Manager Cho Seung-rae criticized Oh, saying, 'Out of the 56 Cabinet meetings held since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration, Candidate Oh attended only twice and made no remarks. With that kind of attendance rate, he gets an F grade.'

Candidate Jeong continued his offensive targeting the incumbent mayor's city administration. He claimed, 'The cause of Seoul's housing crisis lies with Mayor Oh,' and asserted that 'replacing an incompetent mayor is a fundamental principle of elections.' Mentioning the omission of rebar at Samseng Station on the Great Train Express (GTX)-A line, he directly attacked Oh, saying, 'He stated regarding visiting the accident site, "What help would it be to go?" Why would someone who would be of no help want to be mayor again?' He added, 'A mayor with no awareness of safety must be replaced. I will become a mayor who safely protects the daily lives of our citizens.'

Via Facebook, Candidate Jeong emphasized, 'The enthusiasm for early voting reflects the citizens' will to change Seoul. This election is about setting democracy, livelihoods, and safety straight in Seoul.' He added, 'We cannot entrust the lives and safety of our citizens to a mayor who uses city administration for partisan politics.'

Candidate Jeong plans to wage an all-out final campaign, traveling across Seoul until midnight on the 2nd, the final day of the official election campaign, under the slogan 'One step more, campaigning to the very end.' On this day, starting with a service at Muhak Church in Seongdong-gu, the candidate visited Paris Park and Haenuri Sports Park in Yangcheon-gu, Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Gangdong Post Office and Gildong Bokjori Market in Gangdong-gu, and Seokchon Lake in Songpa-gu to meet with citizens. Afterward, he plans to conclude his schedule by visiting the Jamsoo Bridge in Seocho-gu and the area around Sinchon Station in Seodaemun-gu, followed by a walking campaign in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu.

Candidate Jeong's camp views the election landscape as favorable. Standing Election Campaign Committee Chairperson Lee In-young stated, 'Seoul's early voting rate is about 3 percentage points higher than in the 2022 local elections, and the voter turnout trend is moving within our victory indicators. Our winning momentum is solidifying.'

General Election Campaign Headquarters Manager Lee Hae-sik analyzed the poll results announced before the ban on publishing opinion surveys, stating, 'In telephone interview surveys, a lead of 4 to 13 percentage points was maintained.' Regarding ARS (Automated Response System) surveys, while acknowledging a 'close race,' he evaluated that 'due to the sampling characteristics centered on fixed supporters, there are limitations in accurately reflecting public sentiment.' He predicted the final voter turnout could reach the high 50% to 60% range. He forecasted that if voter turnout settles around 55%, Candidate Jeong would emerge victorious. Regarding safety issues such as the GTX Samseng Station rebar omission and the collapse of the Seosomun overpass, he explained, 'They had a significant impact on the race. Following the accidents, the trend showed the gap either stagnating or partially rebounding.'
