According to a report by CryptoBriefing, the Georgian government has decided to install electricity meters in all villages in the northwestern Mestia region in order to comprehensively crack down on illegal cryptocurrency mining.

The government's strong measures also include support from law enforcement agencies for the crackdown to enhance effectiveness on the ground. Abnormal electricity consumption in the Mestia region already demonstrates the severity of illegal mining. Mestia's electricity consumption in 2025 is 133 million kWh, a figure that is a staggering 13 times higher than that of other local municipalities of similar size.

The Georgian government estimated that such illegal cryptocurrency mining causes massive losses to the national power system, ranging from about $7.5 million to up to $9.4 million annually.
