As the KOSPI index plummeted sharply, the Korea Exchange activated the Stage 1 Circuit Breaker (CB), a market stabilization mechanism.

According to the Korea Exchange on the 23rd, as of 2:33:43 p.m. that day, the KOSPI index stood at 8,378.25. This represents a decline of 736.30 points (-8.07%) from the previous day's closing price of 9,114.55. As the KOSPI index remained down more than 8% from the previous close for one minute, trading in the securities market was temporarily suspended for 20 minutes.

The circuit breaker is a system designed to respond to abrupt price fluctuations in the stock market. The tiered measures that may be activated in the event of further declines are as follows.

  • Stage 2 Circuit Breaker: If, after the activation of Stage 1, the KOSPI falls 15% or more from the previous day's closing price and remains more than 1% below the Stage 1 trigger index for one minute, trading will be suspended again for 20 minutes.
  • Stage 3 Circuit Breaker: If, after the activation of Stage 2, the KOSPI falls 20% or more from the previous day's closing price and remains more than 1% below the Stage 2 trigger index for one minute, it will be activated. In this case, all trading in the securities market will be completely terminated for the remainder of the day.

This measure was taken in accordance with Article 25 of the Securities Market Business Regulations and Article 39 of the Enforcement Rules of the same regulations.
