Smotronic (066590) surged to the upper limit on the 21st after starting weak early in the session, followed by a rapid influx of buying interest. During the sharp price increase, the Volatility Interruption (VI) mechanism was triggered three times in succession.

As of 9:55 a.m. on the 21st, Smotronic is trading at 3,185 won, up 735 won (30.00%) from the previous trading day. The intraday low was 2,325 won; despite opening in negative territory, the stock climbed to the price limit within a short period and settled at the upper limit.

Volatility expanded significantly during the surge. According to the Korea Exchange, the first VI was triggered at 9:30:03 a.m., followed by subsequent triggers at 9:37:08 a.m. and 9:41:35 a.m., totaling three activations. This indicates that trading was concentrated in a short period, causing a sharp spike in price volatility.

At the same time, the KOSDAQ index was down more than 1% amid broader market weakness, yet Smotronic exhibited a divergent trend.

Market attention is now focused on whether the buying interest will be sustained and on the potential for further volatility expansion, given that the stock quickly recovered from early-session weakness to reach the upper limit. Considering that short-term volatility was significant enough to trigger the VI three times, a cautious approach is advised.
