[CBC News] An increasing number of people are looking for alternatives to simply leaving their money in a bank savings account. It is a dilemma over how to manage funds that sit in an account anywhere from a day or two to several weeks between paychecks coming in and going out. Amid this trend, the product regaining attention is the Comprehensive Asset Management Account, or CMA.
A CMA is an account operated by securities firms, structured to automatically invest deposited funds into short-term financial products to accumulate returns. On the surface, it is no different from a bank checking account. This is because everyday deposit and withdrawal functions, such as card payments, automatic transfers, and salary deposits, can be used as they are. The core difference is that the money staying in the account does not just sit there; it rolls over on a daily basis.
The background to this structure regaining attention lies in changes in the interest rate environment. In a phase of declining deposit rates, the demand to avoid leaving funds idle even for short periods increases. Conversely, in a phase of rising rates, the appeal of short-term products becomes more prominent, leading to a repeated trend of funds flocking to CMAs. This is also why parking accounts and CMAs are frequently compared side by side.
■ Different Operating Methods and Deposit Protection Eligibility by Type
CMAs are broadly divided into four main types internally based on their operating methods. The RP type operates by using bonds held by the securities firm on a repurchase agreement basis, while the MMF type takes a fund structure that pools funds from multiple investors and invests them in short-term financial products. The MMW type is introduced as a method that reflects real-time operation in highly rated assets. The Jeongeum type is handled by comprehensive finance companies, and its most distinguishing feature from other types is that it is included in the scope of deposit protection.
Since the eligibility for deposit protection and the method of calculating returns differ depending on the type, when choosing a product, you should not just judge by the name but first check how the funds are operated.
■ Utilized as a Repository for Emergency Funds, Salary Accounts, and Investment Standby Funds
In practical use, CMAs are frequently used as a storage place for emergency funds, a salary deposit account, or a temporary station for investment standby funds. If the plan is to roll a lump sum over the long term, deposits or other investment products may be more suitable. However, for those who want to park funds they might withdraw at any time and want to make use of the time they would otherwise be left idle, a CMA is brought up as a compromise.
However, depending on the product type, there are also cases where the possibility of principal loss exists in theory, so it is advisable to clarify in advance what priority will be placed between safety and profitability.
■ Three Checkpoints Before Subscribing
First, you must distinguish whether the product you want to subscribe to is the Jeongeum type, which is subject to deposit protection, or the RP, MMF, or MMW type, which is not protected.
Second, since the method of calculating returns and the conditions for transfers and withdrawals differ by securities firm, a process of directly checking the terms and conditions is necessary.
Third, as the advantages and disadvantages between CMAs and other short-term products may change whenever the interest rate environment shifts, an attitude of periodically reviewing the conditions even after subscription is required.
