Gold Spot Price at $4,055 per Ounce... Holding Above the $4,000 Mark
At the same time, the gold spot price based on the GC New York Mercantile Exchange was at the $4,055 per ounce level. U.S. August gold futures fell 0.4% to $4,090.50. Gold prices have recently been fluctuating within the range of $4,000 to $4,200 per ounce.
When risk appetite in the stock market recovers, it typically weighs on safe-haven assets such as gold. However, once again, gold prices defended the $4,000 per ounce level despite the stock market rally. This is interpreted as a simultaneous reflection of Middle East uncertainty, potential inflation risks, and caution surrounding U.S. monetary policy.

FOMC Holds Rates Steady, 9 in Favor and 3 Against... Acts as a Supportive Factor for Gold Prices
The U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) maintained its target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50–3.75% per annum at its meeting on July 28–29. The vote was 9 in favor and 3 against, with the dissenting members advocating for a 0.25 percentage point rate hike.
Since gold is a non-yielding asset, higher interest rates tend to reduce its relative appeal compared to government bonds or deposits. Conversely, when expectations of rate cuts grow or real interest rates decline, the opportunity cost of holding gold decreases, which is favorable for prices.
This rate freeze acts as a supportive factor in that it did not further increase the burden of holding gold. However, given that voices within the Federal Reserve called for a hike, the possibility remains that gold price volatility could expand depending on future inflation and employment indicators.
