As of August 5, 2026, domestic gold prices showed strength as major precious metals, including pure gold, rose across the board. The future direction of gold prices is expected to hinge on the Middle East situation and U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) monetary policy as key variables.
■ Major Precious Metal Prices (as of August 5) Pure gold (3.75g) was priced at 833,000 won for buying, up 19,000 won from the previous day, and 710,000 won for selling, up 7,000 won. 18K gold traded at 523,000 won (+5,000 won) for selling, and 14K at 406,000 won (+4,000 won) for selling.
Platinum also rose. It recorded 349,000 won (+24,000 won) for buying and 291,000 won (+20,000 won) for selling. Silver continued its upward trend, with selling prices at 10,750 won (+400 won) and buying prices at 11,450 won (+500 won).
■ Gold Prices Hold Firm Despite Rise in Risk Assets Gold prices have maintained their strength even as the New York stock market rallied across the board. Typically, increased risk appetite tends to reduce gold demand, but recent market movements have shown a less straightforward trend.
■ Future Variable 1: Middle East Situation and Strait of Hormuz Investors are closely watching the Middle East situation and whether navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will normalize. While progress in negotiations could ease energy supply concerns, the possibility of renewed military tension remains, leading to forecasts that both international oil prices and gold prices could experience heightened volatility.
■ Future Variable 2: Fed Monetary Policy Gold prices are also influenced by the outlook for U.S. Federal Reserve monetary policy. Expectations of interest rate cuts and a weaker dollar act favorably on gold prices. Conversely, if inflation and employment indicators prove stronger than expected, sustaining a tightening stance, analysts suggest the upside may be limited.
■ U.S. Stock Market Close Draws Attention Meanwhile, market attention is focused on how the U.S. stock market will close in the session on the 5th (local time).
