Suspicions of Cover-Up in Influencer Yang Jeong-won Case... Investigating Police Lieutenant Song Arrested

Influencer Yang Jeong-won, who had been active as a franchise model for a Pilates studio, was accused in July 2024 by franchisees on charges including fraud. Police summoned Yang for questioning once before issuing a 'no suspicion' non-referral decision in December of the same year.

However, during the investigation into this case, it was revealed that Lieutenant Song, who had been the team leader of the 1st Investigation Division at Gangnam Police Station, received cash and entertainment from Yang's husband, a wealthy businessman identified as Mr. Lee, in exchange for covering up the investigation. According to prosecutors, Lee, who was under investigation for stock price manipulation charges, was introduced to Lieutenant Song through a senior police official he was personally acquainted with. Lieutenant Song was found to have buried the investigation in exchange for receiving cash and entertainment, including hosting at adult entertainment establishments, while handling Yang's case.

Prosecutors requested an arrest warrant for Lieutenant Song in April, but the court dismissed it, stating, 'There is a dispute over whether the entertainment or cash constitutes bribery, and the guarantee of the right to defense is necessary.' Prosecutors subsequently secured additional evidence of the investigation cover-up and re-requested the warrant on May 31. On the 5th, Kim Ji-hyun, the warrant-presiding judge at Seoul Southern District Court, issued the arrest warrant on charges of bribery and leakage of official secrets, citing concerns about flight and destruction of evidence.

As a result, the police officer linked to the suspected cover-up of Yang Jeong-won's case has been taken into custody.
