One past work transported ancient mythology into a futuristic space setting, reimagining the Cyclops as a mechanical life form while preserving the core structure of the original and freshly reinterpreting its backdrop and characters. These works also left behind cherished memories of watching TV movie programs together with family.

Odysseus and Ulysses are in fact the same figure, called by different names in Greek, Latin, and English-speaking traditions. In mythology, Odysseus is a hero of the Trojan War who, on his journey home to Ithaca after the war, encounters the one-eyed giant Cyclops Polyphemus, son of the sea god Poseidon. He gets the giant drunk with wine and then drives a fire-heated stake into its eye, thereby incurring Poseidon's wrath and making his journey home all the more perilous.

Reflections on Watching 'The Odyssey': Revisiting the Meaning of a Forgotten Classic While watching the film 'The Odyssey' in theaters recently, memories naturally surfaced of waiting for cartoons in front of the TV as a child and of watching films with my father. Stories that I had regarded in childhood as simple sci-fi comics or adventure films now struck me much more deeply with Odysseus's suffering, his return, and his longing for family. In particular, I realized anew that I was already familiar with even the detailed settings, such as Ulysses's son Telemachus, through the animated series.

Watching this film also brought to mind the movies of director Na Hong-jin. In Na Hong-jin's films, an unidentifiable monster slowly reveals itself, generating fear and tension, and the scene in this work where the characters confront the monster in a cave evoked a similar emotion. Although there is no direct connection between the two works, the way they deal with primal human fear reminded me of the parallels.

The Other Side of a War Hero and the Image of the Modern Family Man This film also changed my perspective on Odysseus. He is the hero who led the war to victory with the Trojan Horse strategy, but he is simultaneously depicted as a man haunted by guilt for the rest of his life as he confronts the tragedy and devastation he brought about. This is why divine beings appear as apparitions that constantly awaken his guilt and reason. Odysseus's realization that the victory in the Trojan War was in fact a tragedy built upon countless deaths reveals the other side of a war hero.

The scene where, after his trials, he is held captive by Calypso for seven years and relies on oblivion resembles the way modern people turn to alcohol or drugs to forget the pain of reality. Yet family, homeland, and the reminder of who he was remain values that can never ultimately be forgotten.

Odysseus's journey in the film can also be read as a story of growth and self-recovery experienced by the head of a household. It overlapped with the image of all fathers who endure the storms of life. In the end, the story of 'The Odyssey' has not changed, but as time has passed and life experience has accumulated, the lens through which I view the work has shifted. Through this film, I came to realize that it was not the world of mythology that had changed, but rather myself, the one receiving it.
