Uruguayan international defender Ronald Araujo, who served as captain at Barcelona, has completed a loan transfer to Liverpool and been assigned the number 33 jersey.

Arauho made 213 official appearances for Barcelona, making significant contributions to the team's major trophy haul including three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and three Supercopa de España titles. He has also earned 27 caps for the Uruguay national team.

After rising through Barcelona's B team and establishing himself as a first-team regular, his role gradually diminished due to recurring injuries, the emergence of young players such as Pau Cubarsi, and intensified competition with Inigo Martinez, Eric Garcia, and Andreas Christensen. Last season, he made only 11 league starts, and his utilization further declined as Jules Kounde took over the right-back position. Ultimately, Barcelona no longer considered Araujo an essential part of their squad and accepted Liverpool's loan offer.

Liverpool officially announced Araujo's loan signing via their website on the 11th (Korean time), with the contract running through the 2026–2027 season. The loan agreement includes a permanent transfer option of 47.14 million pounds (approximately 90.35 billion won).

Liverpool urgently needed to reinforce their defense following Ibrahima Konate's departure to Real Madrid, as well as injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, and the poor form of new signing Jeremy Frimpong.

In his arrival remarks, Araujo said, "I am very excited to join a club with such deep tradition and history as Liverpool. When I was young, everyone in Uruguay would wake up in the early hours to watch Luis Suarez play for Liverpool. I am still close with Suarez, and I recently received a message from him wishing me luck."

He added, "The transfer happened very quickly, and it was the ideal choice at this point in my career. From the moment I learned of Liverpool's interest, everything went smoothly."

Araujo also expressed his anticipation for playing alongside his new teammates, saying, "Everyone knows how great a player Virgil van Dijk is. He is the heart of the team and my role model. I look forward to building a defensive line with Van Dijk and spending time together on and off the pitch." He then showed confidence, stating, "The style of the English Premier League seems to suit my strengths well. I am happy to take on a new challenge in a league I have wanted to play in for a long time. I want to contribute to Liverpool's defense with my physicality and pace."

Regarding his fitness, he said, "I took two weeks of rest after the World Cup and completed preseason training with Barcelona. I am currently in good condition, and I will prepare even further during the two weeks remaining until the league opener to get into the best possible shape." When it came to his season objectives, he showed strong resolve, saying, "If you come to Liverpool, you have to aim to win every competition. I will set high goals and give everything I have on the pitch to lift trophies."

British local media also evaluated the transfer positively for both Liverpool and Araujo. Sky Sports reported, "Liverpool needed reinforcements due to defensive injuries, and Araujo wanted a fresh start as he was not included in manager Flick's plans at Barcelona."

With the acquisition of Araujo, Liverpool is expected to build their center-back line alongside Virgil van Dijk for the upcoming season.
