After soaring more than 176% in a single day, Moderna (MRNA) stock turned lower in early trading on the 20th (local time), showing a 'rollercoaster' pattern. As of 10:30 p.m. on the 20th, Korea time, Moderna was trading at $151.05, down 13.3% from the previous day.

■ A 176.97% Surge in One Day… Trading Near $60 as Recently as the 18th Moderna previously closed at $174.38 in the U.S. market on the 19th (local time). This was a surge of $111.42, or 176.97%, from the prior trading day. The stock, which had been trading around $60 as recently as the 18th (local time), posted a triple-digit gain in just one day, drawing market attention.

However, after jumping to the $170 range in a single day, volatility has greatly expanded due to the sharp short-term rise. In early trading on the 20th, the next trading day, the stock failed to avoid weakness and appeared to be catching its breath.

■ Still More Than Double the Closing Price on the 18th Still, compared to recent levels, the stock remains sharply higher. Even with the early-session weakness on the 20th, it is trading well above double the closing price on the 18th ($62.96).

Accordingly, attention is now focused on whether Moderna's stock will retain a significant portion of its gains following the previous day's record surge, or whether volatility will intensify further.

■ Surge Driven by Merck Co-Developed Personalized mRNA Cancer Vaccine Moderna's surge began after news broke the previous day that a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine co-developed with Merck succeeded in suppressing cancer recurrence and metastasis in a late-stage clinical trial involving high-risk melanoma patients.
