Comedian Lee Sang-joon is setting out on a 24-hour quest to find restaurants overseas. 'Lee Sang-joon's Far-Flung Eateries,' a new YouTube food-and-travel content series produced by Studio Double, will be unveiled for the first time on the 28th at 5 p.m. through its YouTube channel.
'Far-Flung Eateries' is an ultra-short-trip format in which local restaurants across Asian countries are discovered within a single day by airplane. Filming takes place in cities within a five-hour flight from Korea, including Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and Mongolia, based on randomly selected destinations and menus. Once the destination is decided, Lee Sang-joon must find genuinely great restaurants recognized by locals within a 24-hour time limit.
What sets the series apart from existing travel variety shows is its focus on a single meal. Rather than sightseeing or visiting famous restaurants, it captures only the journey for one meal. Filmed without a script or advance preparation, Lee Sang-joon's improvised wit and quick thinking come through naturally as he communicates with locals and handles unexpected situations. Travel scenes are compressed into fast-paced sequences, while visits to restaurants vividly convey the food and the atmosphere on-site. Various filming techniques, including close-up face cameras, emphasize Lee's natural reactions and the sense of being there.
The intent behind the concept is clear: to give modern people, for whom long vacations are difficult, a chance to indirectly experience the authentic tastes of overseas locales in a short time. A subscriber participation event will also be held. Lee Sang-joon will personally visit overseas restaurants recommended by subscribers, select the best one, and give gifts to the subscribers whose picks are chosen.
A Studio Double official said, "We are launching the new YouTube content 'Lee Sang-joon's Far-Flung Eateries' and will present a 24-hour overseas restaurant survival challenge never seen before," adding, "Please look forward to Lee Sang-joon's unpredictable journey as he uses his wit and quick thinking to find truly authentic local restaurants in unfamiliar places abroad."
