Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP from escrow as part of its monthly routine procedure and re-locked 700 million of that amount.
According to a CoinGate report, Ripple followed its scheduled procedure this month by releasing 1 billion XRP and then returning 500 million and 200 million XRP to escrow in separate transactions. Based on transaction values disclosed by Whale Alert, the re-locked 700 million XRP is worth a total of approximately $952 million.
Specifically, 500 million XRP (worth approximately $680.2 million) and 200 million XRP (worth approximately $272 million) were re-locked through separate transactions. XRPL transaction data released by community validator Vet also confirmed two 'EscrowCreate' transactions involving the same amounts.
Meanwhile, according to CoinGate, XRP's price fell about 3% to $1.34 as selling pressure mounted again across the broader cryptocurrency market.
■ 1 Billion XRP Unlocked in Three Transactions... Escrow Balance at 31.28% of Total Supply
According to CoinGate, the 1 billion XRP unlocked this time was released through three transactions split into 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP. Just before the re-locking transactions took place, Ripple's on-chain escrow balance fell to approximately 31.28 billion XRP, which accounts for about 31.28% of XRP's original total supply of 100 billion.
Based on this month's transactions, 300 million XRP remains outside newly created escrow contracts. Vet explained that this amount is typical of Ripple's monthly escrow process, and stated that the funds were identified in a Ripple-managed wallet.
Meanwhile, some claims circulated on social media that Ripple had re-locked the entire 1 billion XRP unlocked this month, but CoinGate reported, based on the two XRPL transactions presented by Vet, that the actual amount re-locked was 700 million XRP.
■ Being Released From Escrow Does Not Mean Going to Exchanges
Ripple has used an escrow system for years to manage its scheduled XRP supply. According to CoinGate, any unused portion of the XRP released each month can be placed back into new escrow contracts to be unlocked at a later date.
Under this method, the scheduled amount becomes available on-chain, but the release of XRP from escrow does not mean that all of it flows into exchanges. CoinGate explained that when a portion is re-locked, that XRP is removed again from the immediately available supply.
Additionally, according to CoinGate, cryptocurrency attorney Bill Morgan pushed back against claims that Ripple's regular escrow allocations directly caused XRP's price decline, saying that XRP is falling in line with Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market.
