U.S. stock markets will be closed for one day on September 7 (local time) in observance of Labor Day. No stock trading will take place on either the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or Nasdaq that day.

Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday designated as the first Monday of September each year. It commemorates the social and economic contributions of workers and is one of the regular market holidays for U.S. exchanges.

◇ Normal Trading Resumes Tuesday, Sept. 8... Korean Markets Operate as Usual

Accordingly, the U.S. regular trading session that would have taken place between September 7 and early morning September 8 Korean time will not be held. Trading will resume normally on Tuesday, September 8, after the Labor Day holiday. Absent any changes, not only the regular session but also pre-market and after-hours trading are expected to operate on their usual schedules. As the NYSE and Nasdaq will be closed simultaneously, U.S. stock investors need to pay attention to the trading schedule.

Korean stock markets will operate normally on September 7 regardless of the U.S. Labor Day holiday. The KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets will open as usual.

◇ Post-Labor Day Market Holidays... Thanksgiving and Christmas

After Labor Day, the next regular U.S. market holiday this year is Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 26. The following day, Friday, November 27, is scheduled for an early close. After that, U.S. markets will be closed again for one day on Friday, December 25, for Christmas.

◇ U.S. Major Indices Closed Lower in Previous Session

Meanwhile, in the session on September 4 (local time), the three major U.S. stock indices each finished lower. Analysts attribute this to growing wariness of interest rate hikes as U.S. nonfarm job gains in August exceeded expectations.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 271.86 points (0.51%) to finish at 53,414.25. The S&P 500 index closed down 29.11 points (0.38%) at 7,718.60, and the Nasdaq Composite ended the session down 77.07 points (0.29%) from the previous session at 26,506.99.

Attention is also focused on how U.S. markets will move after the holiday closure.
