The Ethereum Foundation has set a goal of developing Ethereum's layer 1 (L1) into a network that can withstand quantum computer attacks by 2029. According to the crypto media outlet CoinGape, the Ethereum ecosystem is heading toward the Glamsterdam and Hegoa upgrades in succession, and investors are also paying close attention to ETH's price movements.

December 2029 Set as the Deadline for Quantum Computer Defense

According to the Ethereum Foundation's protocol cluster plan reported by CoinGape, the Foundation will pursue major goals and development plans for the Ethereum ecosystem through 2029. Among these, December 2029 has been set as the deadline for making layer 1 resilient to quantum computer attacks. The Foundation plans to prepare for the quantum computing era across the execution, consensus, and data layers.

CoinGape reported that this timeline aligns with the projected timing of the so-called 'Q-Day' and with the post-quantum transition targets set separately by Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.

Previously, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin had also pointed out areas that could be vulnerable to quantum computers. According to CoinGape, Buterin identified the following as vulnerable areas: BLS signatures in the consensus layer, KZG-based data availability, ECDSA signatures of externally owned accounts (EOAs), and application-layer proofs using KZG or Groth16.

Hegoa Upgrade Targeted for Late Q4 2026... 62 EIPs Under Evaluation

The Hegoa upgrade itself is not a fork that makes Ethereum quantum-resistant. CoinGape explained that Hegoa is an upgrade that will serve as a gauge for whether future forks to prepare for quantum computers can be carried out on time.

The Ethereum Foundation is targeting the implementation of Hegoa for the end of the fourth quarter of 2026 (local time), and is evaluating 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). According to CoinGape, the Foundation classified FOCIL (EIP-7805) in the consensus layer and frame transactions (EIP-8141) in the execution layer as top-tier proposals that must be implemented. Once EIP-8141 is applied, users will be able to pay Ethereum transaction fees with ERC-20 tokens without holding ETH in their wallets.

"The Biggest Challenge Is Transitioning to a New Security System"... Disagreement with Shapira's Claims

Vitalik Buterin also maintains an optimistic view on the long-term security of the blockchain. According to CoinGape, Buterin sees the biggest challenge as lying in the process of transitioning to a new security system, and he expects that the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks will be able to handle any problems that may arise.

He also disagreed with claims made by Liron Shapira, a Silicon Valley angel investor who deals with artificial intelligence risks. Shapira argued that AI could weaken Bitcoin's security system and that the Bitcoin price could plummet 50% within the next two years.

ETH Rises 63% in Two Months... Some Forecast '$2,800'

According to CoinGape, ETH's price has risen more than 63% over the past two months, at one point reaching $2,566. Forecasts for further gains have also emerged. Crypto analyst Ali Martinez, cited by CoinGape, predicted that if ETH maintains its support level, the price could rise to $2,800. According to the Ethereum price outlook reported by CoinGape, ETH is trading within an ascending triangle pattern, and bullish investors are targeting $2,700.

Buying movements also appeared in the derivatives market. According to CoinGlass data cited by CoinGape, at the time of writing, total ETH futures open interest stood at $33.42 billion, up 1.21% over the past 24 hours. In contrast, ETH futures open interest on CME and Binance fell by more than 0.70% and more than 0.35%, respectively.

CoinGape also reported that Polymarket data showed an increased likelihood of the U.S. Federal Reserve raising interest rates in September.
