The 50-year career and success story of Lee Young-hye, a magazine industry giant with annual revenue of 48 billion won, will be revealed on EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire.' From founding Korea's first home interior magazine to discovering a chef featured on Netflix's 'Culinary Class Wars,' her journey meets viewers through the broadcast.
Lee Young-hye's start was not smooth. She began her career in 1976 by joining Korea's first design-focused magazine publisher. However, at the time, the concept of 'design' was unfamiliar, and the magazine soon faced closure. Lee acquired the publisher with her mother's wedding funds, but was forced to shut it down after just six months due to financial difficulties. In the process, she expressed her frustration and even sent a letter to the president.
■ Korea's First Home Interior Magazine Turns a Profit in Just 8 Months After Launch
It was a blessing in disguise. In 1987, Lee founded Korea's first home interior magazine. The magazine gained popularity amid economic growth and the homeownership boom, and drew attention by featuring the families of famous figures, including singer Insooni's family and the late Ahn Sung-ki's family, as cover models.
Lee planned a series in the magazine showcasing happy family life, and the magazine turned a profit within eight months of its launch. She cited a key factor in its success: an event in which one household was selected each month and their home was decorated for free. Seo Jang-hoon commented on this, saying, 'You essentially realized a "Love House" through a magazine.'
Lee's reach did not stop at interior design. She published a variety of specialized magazines covering weddings, childcare, men's lifestyle, and luxury goods, recording annual revenue of up to 48 billion won. The broadcast will also reveal her large headquarters building in central Seoul, consisting of four buildings spanning 400 pyeong, as well as her home in Hannam-dong.
■ The Chef of 'Culinary Class Wars,' a Star Discovered 26 Years Ago
Lee's discerning eye also shone in the culinary world. She early on discovered as the protagonist of a cookbook published in 2000 a chef who recently appeared on the Netflix culinary survival show 'Culinary Class Wars.' She maintained a relationship with the chef for 26 years, and the cookbook sold out 7,000 copies within a week of publication.
The broadcast also includes a scene in which Lee visits the chef in person to taste summer delicacies and share stories.
EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire' airs on the 16th at 9:55 p.m.
