E-mart is making a full-fledged entry into the ultra-low-price daily necessities market. Attention is focused on whether large supermarkets, which have grown centered on groceries, can secure a new growth engine by expanding specialty stores selling kitchenware, cosmetics, and small home appliances at prices ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 won.

'Wow Shop' to Open on the 22nd at Starfield Market Wolgye Store and E-mart Eunpyeong Store

E-mart announced that it will open 'Wow Shop,' an ultra-low-price daily necessities specialty store of about 100 pyeong each, at Starfield Market Wolgye Store and E-mart Eunpyeong Store on the 22nd. Having completed pilot operations since last December centered on some 1,300 types of directly imported overseas daily necessities, the company is now moving into full-scale business expansion.

The newly developed products number about 12,000. Considering the characteristics of each store and seasonal demand, 7,000 to 8,000 items will be presented per store, meaning the product scale has grown six to sevenfold compared to the pilot period.

The pricing policy is also aggressive. All products will be offered at uniform prices from 1,000 to 10,000 won, with about 60% of the total developed products priced at 2,000 won or less. Nine types of Happy Call frying pans will each sell for 5,000 won, and Lock&Lock fresh containers will start at 2,000 won. Silicone cooking utensils will start at 1,000 won, and heat-resistant tempered glass vacuum sealed containers will be introduced at 3,000 won.

Cosmetics, Health Functional Foods, and Home Appliances Also from 1,000 Won

Cosmetics and health functional foods are also included in the ultra-low-price product lineup. Health and beauty products have been expanded to about 790 items, and health functional foods such as multivitamins, milk thistle, and magnesium will also be sold starting at 1,000 won.

Home appliance prices also draw attention. Wired earphones cost 1,000 won, and some 300 types of home appliances, including silent mice, Bluetooth keyboards, electric irons, and handheld vacuum cleaners, are positioned in the under-5,000-won product group. About 100 items, including air fryers, coffee makers, single-person electric mats, and carry-on luggage, will be sold on a limited basis as separately planned 10,000-won products.

E-mart plans to open another Wow Shop at Starfield Market Gunsan Store on the 30th and expand to a total of five medium and large specialty stores within this year. It also plans to create separate Wow Shop spaces inside E-mart and E-mart Everyday stores.

A Change in the Way of Competing… Increasing Reasons to Visit

The core of this business is not simply a price cut but a change in how a large distribution company competes in the daily necessities market. Large supermarkets have functioned as comprehensive distribution spaces where food and daily essentials are purchased in one place. Wow Shop adds the character of an ultra-low-price non-food specialty store to this.

E-mart's goal is clear: to combine non-food product competitiveness with its existing grocery competitiveness and increase the reasons for customers to visit large supermarkets. E-mart intends to expand its product sourcing range to the United States, Europe, Japan, and China, and secure both price and quality through collaboration with some 100 major domestic and international brands as well as exclusive product planning. This strategy of converting the purchasing scale and product development capabilities of a large corporation into price competitiveness means that, from the consumer's perspective, there will be more products to choose from and a reduced purchasing burden.

Wow Shop is set to expand not only as independent specialty stores but also within existing E-mart and E-mart Everyday stores. As new specialty store openings and sales expansion utilizing the existing distribution network proceed together, future changes in regional competitive dynamics will be an important point of observation. It is still difficult to judge whether this strategy will achieve results in reducing consumers' spending burden while minimizing conflict with local small business owners.

Hwang Woong-gi, head of E-mart's merchandising division, said, "Expanding opportunities to purchase good products at reasonable prices is the company's core value," adding, "We will continuously strengthen ultra-low-price daily necessities by leveraging our product planning capabilities and global sourcing capacity." The goal of supplying good products cheaply to consumers is clear. However, whether the competitiveness of a distribution company can be evaluated based on price alone is another matter.
