Hotel Shilla CEO Lee Boo-jin attended a ceremony marking the opening of a special Korean art exhibition at the British Museum in London, joining the Samsung family's cultural heritage preservation and sharing activities.
Lee visited the British Museum together with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Leeum Museum of Art Honorary Director Hong Ra-hee, and Samsung C&T CEO Lee Seo-hyun.
On September 30 (local time), Samsung hosted a gala dinner in London to celebrate the opening of the special exhibition 'Korea: 2,000 years of Creativity' at the British Museum, with CEO Lee Boo-jin listed among the attendees alongside the Samsung family.
The exhibition was jointly organized by the National Museum of Korea, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the British Museum to introduce Korean art and cultural heritage abroad. It is the first large-scale Korean art special exhibition at the British Museum in 42 years, since 1984.
The London exhibition is the third stop of the overseas tour, following Washington, D.C. last year and Chicago this year. The two U.S. exhibitions drew a total of 195,000 visitors, with about 80,000 in Washington, D.C. and about 115,000 in Chicago viewing Korean art.
The opening ceremony was also attended by figures from the British royal family, politics, business, and the arts. Princess Anne of the British royal family attended a reception held ahead of the gala dinner, and some 240 guests, including global corporate executives and leading cultural figures, attended the dinner.
The event also introduced the Samsung family's long history of collecting and preserving artworks. The cultural heritage collection begun by Samsung founding Chairman Lee Byung-chul was carried on by the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee, while Honorary Director Hong Ra-hee contributed to developing a collection spanning ancient and contemporary art.
In his remarks that day, Chairman Lee Jae-yong said, 'Our family has upheld, across generations, the principle that art and culture must be preserved and shared.'
As the business leader of Hotel Shilla and a member of the Samsung family, CEO Lee Boo-jin's attendance added significance to the expansion of the family's generations-long cultural heritage preservation and sharing activities into Europe at an international stage introducing Korean cultural heritage to the world.
Meanwhile, as of the afternoon of the 23rd, Lee Boo-jin ranked fifth in the October Netizen Awards Business Person category, placing in the top tier. The category is meaningful in that the public expresses its interest in and support for business leaders through voting. Attention is focused on how interest in Lee, who continues her corporate management and external activities, will be reflected in the remaining October ranking competition and the final vote results.
