[Places to Visit in Suwon] 5 Scenic Spots Where Sky, Lake, History, and Nature Come Together

Suwon is a city where the past and present coexist, offering a colorful charm. Blending historical spaces centered around the World Heritage site Suwon Hwaseong, modern cityscapes, and lush nature, it provides a special experience. Here are five representative places to visit in Suwon that offer memorable moments.

1. Flying Suwon (Jidong, Paldal-gu) You can rise up to 150 meters into the sky aboard a tethered helium balloon and take in a panoramic view of the entire Suwon Hwaseong fortress. The majestic fortress walls and city views from the sky offer different landscapes every season, providing a special visual experience during the approximately 10-minute flight. A well-trained pilot accompanies the ride, and it is a safe facility that complies with European Aviation Safety Agency regulations.

2. Gwanggyo Lake Park (Hadong, Yeongtong-gu) This is the largest lakeside park in a Korean urban area. It maximally preserves the nature of Gwanggyo Mountain, Woncheon Reservoir, and Silldae Reservoir, harmonizing beautiful waterfront spaces with six themed wetlands. Within the park, nine fountain facilities, including the Mystical Mulneomi and Water Gem Fountains, add dynamism to the water. A 6.5-kilometer circular pedestrian walkway offers a leisurely stroll along the lake. Its beauty has been recognized with the IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) Award and the Korea Landscape Award.

3. Seoho Park (Hwaseo-dong, Paldal-gu) This park is built around Seoho Reservoir, which was created during the Joseon Dynasty's King Jeongjo era for agricultural irrigation. The reservoir still holds historical traces with the Chukmanje embankment built by King Jeongjo. The park's walking trail connects to the Suwon Palseok-gil trails, making it great for strolls. Diverse migratory birds and trees blend together, allowing visitors to appreciate the changing natural ecology across the four seasons. The park houses Hangmijeong, Cultural Heritage Material No. 1, and the sunset at Seoho is renowned as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Suwon.

4. Aqua Planet Gwanggyo (Hadong, Yeongtong-gu) This indoor theme park allows visitors to experience an underwater world in the middle of the city. You can encounter about 210 species and 30,000 marine and terrestrial creatures up close, and the park runs various educational and experiential programs. Through aquarist ecology presentations, feeding experiences, and a jellyfish laboratory, visitors can explore the mysteries of these creatures. The thrilling shark tank transparent boat, Aqua Kids playground, and various performances provide visitors with abundant attractions.

5. Haewoojae Museum (Imok-dong, Jangan-gu) Shaped like a toilet, this unique building bears the meaning of 'a house to relieve one's worries.' Built to commemorate the founding of the World Toilet Association, Mr. Toilet Sim Jae-deok remodeled his house into the shape of a toilet bowl, registering it in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007 as the largest toilet sculpture. Donated to Suwon City after Sim's passing, it currently operates as a toilet culture exhibition hall. Amusing toilet-related sculptures are displayed in front of the museum, and families can spend a beneficial time learning toilet etiquette together at the Haewoojae Children's Experience Center.
