Top 5 Tourist Destinations in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do: A Summer Journey of Peace, History, and Scenic Beauty

Located in the northwestern part of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Cheorwon-gun has long been a land that embraces the abundant Cheorwon Plain and preserves a diverse history and culture. It is characterized by its unique landscapes where the pain of division and the wonders of nature coexist, and where the past and present intersect. Under the bright summer sun, the area becomes even greener, offering visitors the chance to discover various charming destinations.

Cheorwon History and Culture Park (Sayori, Cheorwon-eup) This is a miniature recreation of the bustling downtown area of Cheorwon-eup in the 1930s. Buildings retaining their vintage appearances line the central street, and visitors can catch a glimpse of the era's atmosphere at the Modern Culture Street and the History Exhibition and Experience Center. It is convenient to explore after obtaining information from the comprehensive information center at the park entrance. In particular, a monorail operates from Cheorwon Station to the summit of Soisan, allowing visitors to travel while enjoying the sweeping views of the Cheorwon Plain. Known as a filming location for the entertainment program <Running Man>, this site is well-maintained, providing a pleasant environment and boasting an open panoramic view.

Cheorwon Hantangang River Columnar Jointing Trail (Guntan-ri, Galma-eup) This is a cliffside walkway installed halfway up the vertical cliffs of the Hantangang River. Walking along the winding path that follows the water currents, visitors can observe the awe-inspiring columnar joint gorge and various rock formations up close. Viewed from the cliffside path suspended 20 to 30 meters above the water, the Hantangang River valley flows in an 'S' shape, creating a spectacular view where vertical cliffs standing like folding screens and small waterfalls seamlessly blend together. Starting from the Deulnyi Gate offers a largely downhill path, making for a comfortable walk. Following the well-maintained pedestrian deck, visitors can take in the surrounding scenery from 10 observation shelters. It has also been featured on the entertainment program <Hangout with Yoo>, offering a thrilling experience.

Cheorwon Peace Observatory (Junggang-ri, Dongsong-eup) Because it is located within the Civilian Control Zone, individual tourism is not permitted. Visitors can tour the area after registering at the DMZ Crane Peace Town (Yangji-ri) and being accompanied by a guide. From the observatory, the vast expanse of the Cheorwon Plain and the scenery of the DMZ area come into view at a glance. This place, where the traces of a divided history and a longing for peace intersect, offers profound meaning that goes beyond simple sightseeing.

Cheorwon Hyanggyo (Hwaji-ri, Cheorwon-eup) Established in the early Joseon Dynasty, this site served as the spiritual and cultural center of the Cheorwon area. It was destroyed during the Korean War and has been restored to its current state. It well displays the traditional architectural style of a Hyanggyo, featuring an outer triple gate, the West Hall (Seojae), the East Hall (Dongjae), an inner triple gate, Myeongnyundang, and Daeseongjeon. Daeseongjeon has a frontage of 3 kan (traditional bays) and a depth of 1 kan, while the adjacent Myeongnyundang is laid out with a frontage of 4 kan and a depth of 3 kan. The East Hall (Dongjae) houses the hanging signboard of the Cheorwon branch of the Korean Confucius Association, making it a place where one can discover the traces of Confucian culture passed down through a long history.

Cheorwon Small Movie Theater Duru (Hwaji-ri, Cheorwon-eup) This is a cultural complex for local residents. Comprising two screening rooms (Theater 1 and Theater 2), it provides an opportunity for people in the area to conveniently enjoy the latest movies and spend their leisure time. It is a place where one can experience the joy of movie-going in a modest yet warm and inviting atmosphere.
