A major explosion occurred at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant, located in Oesam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon Metropolitan City, at approximately 10:59 a.m. on the 1st, leaving five dead and two seriously or slightly injured. Initial tallies indicated six fatalities, but authorities corrected the number to five following precise verification.
Immediately after the accident, relevant agencies, including the fire department and police, were urgently dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue and recovery operations. Authorities are making every effort to secure the safety of the accident site while checking for any additional casualties.
President Lee Jae-myung was briefed on the situation and instructed to mobilize all available resources for rescue and recovery efforts. Kang Yoo-jung, Senior Deputy Spokesperson for the Presidential Office, stated that President Lee also called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and the establishment of measures to prevent similar accidents from recurring in the future.
The government also launched an immediate response. Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Young-hoon issued an emergency directive for a swift recovery. The Ministry of Employment and Labor formed the Central Industrial Disaster Recovery Headquarters, and the Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Office set up the Regional Industrial Disaster Recovery Headquarters, both commencing their on-site responses. The Ministry of Labor plans to inspect overall safety management conditions, including potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and investigate the cause of the accident while continuing to take necessary measures for victim support and accident recovery in cooperation with relevant agencies.
