Places to Visit in Sunchang: 5 Healing Spots to Comfort a Weary Heart

Sunchang in Jeollabuk-do is a place where pristine natural environments, deep history, and a unique fermentation culture breathe life. The mountains surrounding the area like a folding screen and the clear valley water offer the perfect scenery for those seeking true rest away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here are five places to visit in Sunchang that heal the body and mind.

1. Gentle Mountain Slopes and Beautiful Valleys, 'Gangcheonsan' Located in Cheonggye-ri, Paldeok-myeon, Sunchang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Gangcheonsan is a beautiful rocky mountain forming a small gorge centered around Wangjabong, Gwangdeoksan Seonnyeobong, and Sanseongsan Yeondaeobong. Clear water springs up like a fountain in every valley, which is why it was called 'Gangcheon' (river of heaven), and in the past, it was also called 'Yongcheonsan' because it was said to resemble the shape of two dragons ascending to the sky. The numerous peaks extending from the Noryeong Mountain Range, along with Yeondae Valley and Seonnyeo Valley, blend together to boast a picturesque landscape. In spring, pussy willows, forsythias, azaleas, and wild cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and in midsummer, the cool waters of Gangcheon relieve the heat, allowing visitors to appreciate its beauty in all four seasons. The mountain slopes are not steep, making it suitable for leisurely walks or hiking with family, friends, and partners.

2. Unique Jangseung Theme Park, 'Churyeong Jangseung Village' In the Churyeong Village of Seoma-ri, Bokheung-myeon, Sunchang-gun, there is Churyeong Jangseung Village, a specialized exhibition space for jangseung (traditional Korean totem poles). Opened in 1992, this place is located in Churyeong at an altitude of 320m, which is the border between Sunchang-gun and Jeongeup-si in Jeollabuk-do and the midpoint of the Noryeong Mountain Range. To the south lies Gangcheonsan, to the west Baekyangsan, and to the north Naejangsan, surrounding the area like a folding screen. On the spacious outdoor grounds, about 1,000 pieces are exhibited, including traditional jangseung from all over the country, jangseung artworks, jangseung and sotdae (wooden bird poles) from Africa and India, and dugout huts, creating a unique atmosphere. In the small exhibition room, visitors can view about 100 folk materials, watch a jangseung craftsman create artworks in person, or even participate in a jangseung carving experience.

3. Sustainable Wellness Space, 'Sunchang Chill Land' Sunchang Chill Land, located in Ssangam-ri, Ingye-myeon, Sunchang-gun, stands for 'Sustainable Health In Life' and advocates a healing space for a sustainable, healthy life. Here, you can enjoy wellness experiences combining spa and relaxation, as well as healthy food experiences utilizing Sunchang's pristine agricultural products. Various programs are prepared, such as a fermentation coffee experience that practices the aesthetics of slowness, and a hinoki cypress forest experience that helps stabilize the mind and body and relieve stress, making it a great place to restore a weary body and mind and enjoy complete rest.

4. Emotional Healing in Nature, Healing Agriculture Farm 'Olleo' Located in Hwaam-ri, Gurim-myeon, Olleo is a place that operates various healing experience programs based on healing agriculture. It offers visitors an emotional time in the embrace of nature, providing comfort and vitality. Programs are prepared to communicate with nature and care for the body and mind. In particular, the foot bath experience relieves the fatigue of tired feet and provides deep rest, highly recommended for those seeking quiet relaxation.

5. Meeting of Apiculture and Experiences, Return-to-Farming Couple's 'Gain Farm' Located in Dapdong-ri, Bokheung-myeon, Sunchang-gun, Gain Farm is operated by a return-to-farming couple who settled in the beautiful maple village of Gangcheonsan. They carry on beekeeping as a family business and offer various rural experiences. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as making thistle gochujang using thistle, which is added to Sunchang's pride, gochujang; an ecological honey harvesting experience using natural honey; and making honey-cheong (syrup). It also operates a two-day, one-night rural experience program, making it a healing farm and an educational farm where simply staying provides a sense of healing.
