UN Security Council Urges "Halt to Israel's Military Actions in Lebanon" Excluding the US... Criticized as a "Strategic Mistake"

As the Lebanese crisis has emerged as a key variable in ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran, UN Security Council members, excluding the United States, have urged a halt to Israel's military actions in Lebanon.

According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 1st (local time), the Security Council held an emergency meeting at France's request to discuss the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon. During this session, permanent members such as France, the United Kingdom, Russia, and China, along with non-permanent members including Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Denmark, Liberia, and Colombia, demanded Israel's troop withdrawal and a de-escalation of tensions.

France's UN Ambassador, Jerome Bonnafont, strongly criticized the situation, stating, "Israel is committing a major strategic mistake," and that "while there is a right to respond to Hezbollah attacks, the current scale and method cannot be justified." The UK's Deputy UN Ambassador, James Kariuki, also pointed out that "excessive military escalation is increasing the suffering of Lebanese civilians and placing a burden on the government."

Meanwhile, the United States, the only one among the five permanent members, reportedly supported Israel's position and emphasized the responsibility of Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian armed faction in Lebanon. Israel's UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, took a defensive stance, stating, "The essence of the problem is Hezbollah's preemptive attack," referring to the recent missile attacks on civilian towns in northern Israel.

On the day of the Security Council meeting, major chaos erupted locally in Lebanon as tens of thousands of people fled after Israel announced airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. In particular, concerns over an expanded occupation grew as Israeli forces advanced into southern Lebanon the previous day.

However, the tension has temporarily entered a calming phase as US President Donald Trump persuaded Israel to exercise restraint in its attacks, and Hezbollah also announced it would halt its attacks on Israel.

Previously, in early March, Hezbollah attacked Israel under the pretext of supporting Iran, and since then, Israel has continued military operations in Lebanon with the goal of eliminating Hezbollah. Currently, the Lebanese government is negotiating with Israel to halt the hostilities, but it lacks control over Hezbollah.
