Hanwha Ocean (042660) recorded a strong upward trend on the 6th despite broader market weakness, reclaiming the '110,000 Ocean' level. However, after market close, local reports emerged that Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) had been selected as the preferred bidder in Canada's next-generation submarine project, introducing a new variable to the stock's future direction.

On this day, the KOSPI closed at 8,051.33, down 37.01 points (0.46%) from the previous trading day, showing a weak performance. Even as the index turned lower during the session, Hanwha Ocean closed at 116,100 won, up 9,200 won (8.61%) from the previous trading day. It maintained a strong trend throughout the session, successfully recovering the 110,000-won level.

Market attention had been focused on the outcome of the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). Evaluated as a massive project worth around 60 trillion won with a maximum of 12 vessels, Hanwha Ocean had been in a final competition with Germany's TKMS.

However, Canadian media outlet The Globe and Mail reported on the 6th (local time) that the Canadian government had selected Germany's TKMS as the contractor for the procurement of 12 next-generation submarines. This marks a disappointing outcome in the massive submarine project, which had been expected to serve as a bridgehead for entering the North American defense market.

The key question now is where the short-term stock price trend will head. Investors need to monitor future domestic and international defense contract news along with changes in overall market investment sentiment.
