Shim Jae-won moved judge Yang Soo-kyung to tears with a heartfelt song dedicated to his aunt, Shim Hye-jin, during the main round of TV CHOSUN's documentary variety show "The Lover of Joseon" 5th anniversary special, "The Lover of Joseon Singing Contest."
Ahead of his main round performance, Shim Jae-won revealed that the song he chose was a Korean ballad, the homeland of his mother. He shared that after his mother passed away at the age of 19, his aunt Shim Hye-jin took care of him and became a steadfast source of emotional support. He said he wanted to convey his unchanging love and gratitude to his aunt through his performance.
After the performance, Yang Soo-kyung, who was seated at the judges' panel, teared up and wept. Yang Soo-kyung said, "I have a daughter in the United States who calls me 'aunt.' Hearing a song dedicated to an aunt reminded me of my daughter and brought me to tears." She added that Shim Hye-jin must be truly happy to have Shim Jae-won express his gratitude through song, and said she was deeply moved once again.
Born to an American father and a Korean mother, Shim Jae-won used his life's signature song on this stage to convey a special message to his aunt Shim Hye-jin. The main round performance is scheduled to air on July 13 at 10 p.m.
