On August 12, 2026, domestic gold prices in South Korea rose across the board for pure gold, 18K, and 14K, based on Gold Price.com. Silver also showed modest gains, while platinum remained stable.
Pure gold (3.75g) rose by 5,000 won to 745,000 won for selling and increased by 4,000 won to 874,000 won for buying. 18K rose by 3,000 won to 549,000 won for selling, and 14K increased by 2,000 won to 426,000 won for selling.
Platinum showed no price change, remaining at 285,000 won for selling and 342,000 won for buying. Silver rose by 100 won to 11,250 won for selling and by 50 won to 12,000 won for buying.
International prices are also showing strength. Based on the GC New York Mercantile Exchange, international gold prices are trading above the $4,400 per ounce mark.
The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July, announced on this day in Korean time, rose 3.4% year-over-year. The core CPI, excluding energy and food, increased by 2.5%.
Since price trends directly affect interest rate forecasts and the value of the dollar, attention is focused on how this CPI result will serve as a variable for the direction of international gold prices. Following the CPI, the Producer Price Index (PPI) is also scheduled for release. As the market's assessment of U.S. price trends becomes more concrete, gold price volatility is expected to increase.
Gold is highly sensitive to U.S. interest rate trends. Higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding gold compared to interest-bearing assets such as bonds, putting pressure on gold prices. Conversely, if upward pressure on interest rates eases, gold's relative investment appeal could increase.
