SBS 'Three Perspectives' will take an in-depth look at the truth behind 'zombie cells,' which affect aging and health. The program will air on Sunday, August 23 at 8:35 a.m.
The broadcast will feature MCs Kim Seok-hoon and So Seul-ji, along with science writer Kwak Jae-sik, docent Lee Chang-yong, family medicine specialist Lee Hyun-hee, and internal medicine specialist Jung Yong-hwan, who will examine the impact of zombie cells on physical health from various perspectives.
Zombie cells are known to remain in the body despite losing their function, sending harmful signals to normal cells and contributing to the progression of aging and disease. Docent Lee Chang-yong cited the discovery by anatomist Leonard Hayflick in 1961 that human cells have a limited number of divisions, explaining that the danger lies in cells that have reached the end of their lifespan not being removed in time and remaining in the body.
The program presents the case of a mouse that voluntarily approaches a cat, suggesting that a loss of control can occur even within normal cells, not just from external sources of infection.
Family medicine specialist Lee Hyun-hee emphasized that aging should be interpreted not simply as the passage of time, but as a dangerous process in which zombie cells attack the body. To show that even young people are not exempt from the danger of zombie cells, she introduces the case of a 25-year-old man who died suddenly from abnormal heart cells despite having no underlying conditions.
Internal medicine specialist Jung Yong-hwan stated that when cells lose their ability to recover, fatal risks can arise regardless of age.
The program will also cover methods for managing zombie cells already present in the body and expert opinions on healthy aging. It emphasizes that both young and elderly people can be affected by zombie cells, and contains an analysis of the identity of zombie cells and the secrets of aging from three perspectives.
