Researchers at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) have designed a blockchain-based system capable of verifying whether official economic statistics have been tampered with, and published the results of a trial conducted on the XRP Ledger (XRPL).

According to the overseas crypto media outlet CoinGape, BIS introduced the proof-of-concept results of a system designed to verify the reliability of official statistical data in Working Paper No. 1374, released on September 2 (local time). However, BIS made clear that the research is a proof of concept for research purposes, not an actual operational deployment.

■ Why Blockchain? The Limits of the SDMX Standard

The starting point of the research is the limitations of the SDMX standard used by international institutions to distribute financial and economic data. CoinGape reported that this format has no built-in way for users to verify whether downloaded files are identical to the originals. As governments and artificial intelligence (AI) systems regularly pull such data, there is no means of quickly detecting if figures were altered—even accidentally—on third-party portals.

■ Hash → Merkle Root → Ledger Record: How It Works

According to CoinGape, BIS researchers assigned each batch of data a hash, a unique cryptographic fingerprint. Thousands of fingerprints can be aggregated into a single summary value called a 'Merkle root.' Recording this Merkle root on the XRP Ledger stamps it with a timestamp and makes it immutable thereafter. Published files also include a digital signature certificate linked to the publisher's identity. As a result, users can verify both who published the data and whether it was altered after publication with just a single ledger lookup.

■ Experiment Results: Publication in 3–5 Seconds, Verification in 1–2 Seconds

According to the experiment results reported by CoinGape, the prototype's median data publication time was 3–5 seconds, and verification took 1–2 seconds. The cost of recording on-chain was negligible, and a single ledger record could handle thousands of data batches. Since only fingerprints of the data, not the actual data itself, are recorded on-chain, confidentiality is also preserved. The researchers released the entire codebase as open source.

■ Institutional Use Cases Keep Coming—But It's Not an 'Official Adoption'

CoinGape also noted that SBI, a Ripple partner, has previously participated in infrastructure work related to BIS. SBI confirmed its participation in BIS's Project Agora. Citing these points, CoinGape explained that this is not the first time the XRP Ledger has been used in a high-level institutional research environment.

Institutional-level cases utilizing the XRP Ledger have continued recently. JPMorgan, Ripple, Mastercard, andondo recently completed an experiment settling tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds on the XRP Ledger in four seconds. CoinGape explained that the experiment and this BIS research share technical commonalities: low fees, fast transaction finality, and a ledger that institutional developers can actually build on. It also reported that as demand converges simultaneously in real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and custody, institutional interest in the XRP Ledger is growing. The BIS research effectively adds one more use case—verifying the reliability of official statistical data—to this list.

In terms of price, according to CoinGape at the time of writing, XRP was trading at $1.37, up 1.42% over 24 hours. The 24-hour trading volume was $2.46 billion, and the market capitalization based on a circulating supply of 63 billion XRP was approximately $85.7 billion. However, over the past 7 days, it has fallen 2.40%.

There are caveats. CoinGape cautioned that this research should not be interpreted as BIS officially adopting the XRP Ledger. The test was conducted on Devnet, a development network, not the XRP Ledger mainnet, and remains at the proof-of-concept stage. It is not an announcement that BIS has adopted the XRP Ledger as official infrastructure, nor does it mean XRP will be used in central bank payments.
