Daechang Solution has obtained a patent for a manufacturing technology for boron-containing stainless steel, which can be used to shield neutrons emitted from spent nuclear fuel.

According to the company, the patent was granted on the 31st of last month in South Korea, under the name 'Method for Manufacturing Stainless Steel Containing Boron.'

Existing manufacturing methods had limitations: the recovery rate and content control of boron were difficult, and defect substances such as Cr₂B occurred during the boron addition process, potentially degrading mechanical properties and workability.

To improve on this, Daechang Solution applied a new manufacturing process. A mother alloy is produced through decarburization and degassing after primary melting, and after component analysis, a boron source and necessary alloying elements are added for secondary melting. In addition, the company adjusted boron content using ferroboron and improved the homogenization of molten steel through inert gas injection and stirring inside the melting furnace.

The company stated that this technology can reduce defects caused by boron addition and contribute to the manufacture of large-scale boron-containing stainless steel and quality assurance.

Daechang Solution plans to utilize this patent as a manufacturing technology for boron-containing stainless steel for neutron shielding and to review its application in nuclear power-related materials in the future. Based on the patent, the company plans to secure technological competitiveness in the field and protect its rights.
