[U.S. Treasury yields, a key variable for the direction of international gold prices]

Separately from the domestic price movement, the possibility of further rises in U.S. Treasury yields is emerging as a major variable that will determine the direction of international gold prices.

Daniel Ivascyn, chief investment officer (CIO) at bond manager PIMCO, said in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) on the 11th (local time) that amid continued selling pressure in the bond market, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield could rise to around the 6% level. The yield stood at 5.26% at the time, and if it climbs further, losses being locked in by leveraged investors could amplify market volatility, according to this analysis.

CIO Ivascyn in particular warned that if the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield exceeds 5.5%, it could place a significant burden on risk asset markets.

[Impact on gold prices]

A rise in U.S. Treasury yields could also have a considerable impact on the gold market. Since gold is a non-interest-bearing asset, higher bond yields could weaken its relative investment appeal.

However, if a sharp surge in Treasury yields spreads into broader turmoil in stock and credit markets, demand for safe assets could support gold prices.

[Inflation concerns also a variable for gold]

Markets are also focused on the possibility that unstable oil price movements, large-scale fundraising centered on the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, and the robust U.S. economy could prolong inflationary pressure. If inflation concerns grow, upward pressure on Treasury yields could increase, which in turn is expected to affect gold prices.

Going forward, international gold prices are expected to seek direction amid a combination of U.S. Treasury yield movements, inflation indicators, and geopolitical uncertainty.
