■ International Gold Market Focuses on U.S. Inflation Data and Fed Rate Decisions

Attention in the international gold market is turning to U.S. inflation indicators and the Federal Reserve's (Fed) upcoming interest rate decisions. Uncertainty surrounding the U.S. interest rate outlook also persists. Along with the recent decline of major tech stocks, U.S. inflation trends have emerged as a key variable in the gold market.

The September PCE price index announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce on the 29th (local time) rose 3.6% year over year, 0.1 percentage point lower than the 3.7% expected by market experts. The month-over-month increase was 0.5%, in line with market forecasts. However, compared to the 0.3% month-over-month rise in August, the pace of increase widened by 0.2 percentage points.

This inflation indicator simultaneously shows factors that could affect the gold market in different directions. The fact that the year-over-year rate came in below market expectations can be interpreted as a factor easing pressure for further rate hikes. On the other hand, the widening month-over-month price increase could support the judgment that inflation remains at a level that warrants vigilance.

The Fed maintained its benchmark rate target range at 3.75% to 4.00% per year at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 28th. The Fed assessed that economic activity continues to expand at a solid pace, but inflation remains at an elevated level. In particular, with additional inflation and employment data to be released ahead of the December FOMC potentially changing the rate outlook, attention is also focused on the future movement of international gold prices.
