Shin Sang-soo, who built a wedding company with an annual revenue of 50 billion won, will appear on EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire' to reveal for the first time his entrepreneurial journey and his experience during the Sampoong Department Store collapse.
Shin Sang-soo started his wedding business in 1996 in a 25-pyeong office on the top floor of a six-story building. Unlike the industry norm where wedding shops are typically located on the first or second floor, Seo Jang-hoon could not hide his surprise at the decision to start on the sixth floor, to which Shin responded, "I had confidence." Within two to three months of founding the business, he achieved great success with customers lining up every weekend.
Shin stated that in the Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon areas, where approximately 5,000 couples get married annually, his company handled 2,000 weddings. From the early days of the business, he introduced a 'wedding total care program' that comprehensively provided makeup, wedding photography, honeymoons, furniture, hanbok, and household goods, explaining, "I essentially played the role of today's wedding planners."
In 2010, he acquired a famous wedding hall in Gangnam and expanded the business to seven wedding halls and three wedding dress shops, achieving an annual revenue of 50 billion won. The company had 200 employees, and during the peak wedding season, the number of part-time workers increased to as many as 1,000. Recently, the company has also been in charge of award ceremony dresses for famous Korean actresses, including Jung Eun-chae, Kim Ji-won, Park Ji-hyun, Jang Yoon-ju, and Cho Yeo-jeong.
Before entering the wedding business, Shin joined an insurance company after completing his military service and recorded the top sales performance within two years, earning the title of 'Insurance King.' Having directly experienced the 1995 Sampoong Department Store collapse, he stated that he usually worked until 6 to 7 p.m., but on the day of the incident, he left the department store at 4 p.m. because it was a deadline day. He confessed that upon hearing the news of the collapse two hours later, he barely survived but subsequently suffered from nightmares and a sense of guilt.
The broadcast will also highlight Shin's journey of becoming a representative figure in the South Korean wedding industry, having conducted 50,000 weddings over 30 years through his wedding business, as well as the changes in his life.
