The story of wedding entrepreneur Shin Sang-soo, who left the insurance industry after the Sampoong Department Store collapse disaster and entered the wedding industry to achieve annual sales of up to 50 billion won, was shared on EBS's "Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire."
Shin Sang-soo was working at an insurance company at the time of the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995. He managed about 100 department store employees as clients and left the site around 4 p.m. on the day of the incident, unlike his usual routine. Two hours later, the disaster occurred, and 10 of his clients died. He stated that he felt deep sorrow and guilt while processing the final insurance payouts for his clients.
After leaving the insurance business, he entered the wedding industry in 1996. He liquidated a 100-million-won jeonse (lease deposit) home and moved into a small room costing around 2 million won, using the remaining 80 million won as startup capital. In the early days, he acquired customers directly using phone directories and introduced a total wedding care program covering makeup, wedding photography, honeymoons, traditional hanbok attire, and household furnishings. The business grew rapidly, operating seven wedding halls and three wedding dress shops, and recording peak annual sales of 50 billion won.
However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic restricted the number of wedding attendees, leading to hundreds of cancellations, and he had to close all seven wedding halls. During this period, he spent time hiking in the mountains, reflecting on what he truly wanted to do, and eventually returned to the wedding business.
Over the past 30 years, Shin has officiated 50,000 weddings and provided free weddings for 200 couples who faced financial difficulties. He is also the 777th member of the Honor Society and continues his philanthropic activities.
The broadcast featured Seo Jang-hoon and Jang Ye-won visiting Shin Sang-soo's wedding dress shop. Jang Ye-won tried on a wedding dress to experience being a bride-to-be, and Shin asked Seo Jang-hoon to pick out a dress for him, drawing laughter.
Regarding his reason for entering the wedding business, Shin said, "I wanted to sell joy rather than anxiety." He added, "My ultimate goal is to establish a marriage culture foundation so that no one has to suffer the indignity of a wedding they cannot afford."
