On the 7th, the office of Rep. Kwon Chil-seung (Democratic Party of Korea, Hwaseong-eul, Gyeonggi Province) announced that Student A, a high school student who was seriously injured while attempting to rescue someone during a knife rampage, has been officially recognized as a Grade 9 Order of Merit recipient. The announcement was based on documents submitted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

On May 5, Student A heard the screams of the late Chae-won Lee near a pedestrian walkway by a university in Wolgae-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and rushed to rescue her, only to be seriously wounded by a weapon wielded by Yoon-ki Jang.

A month after the incident, Gwangsan-gu, in cooperation with the Gwangju Police Agency, secured investigative evidence and medical opinions verifying Student A's rescue efforts. After comprehensively reviewing the situation and circumstances of the injury, the district requested a formal review from the Ministry of Health and Welfare. As a result, on the 24th of last month, the Merit Review Committee of the Ministry of Health and Welfare officially designated Student A as a Grade 9 Order of Merit recipient.

With this decision, Student A will receive state honors and benefits corresponding to his injury. Meanwhile, the Order of Merit system is a framework through which the Ministry of Health and Welfare designates individuals who die or are injured while engaging in rescue activities to save the life, body, or property of others in danger, regardless of their official duties.
