After facing fierce backlash, Rep. Hwang Hee of the Democratic Party of Korea officially apologized to the public and young people following the withdrawal of his proposed "bus house" initiative — a plan to utilize decommissioned buses as temporary housing spaces for young adults.

The 'Bus House' Proposal and the Spark of Controversy On the 7th, Rep. Hwang posted an idea on his Facebook page suggesting that废弃 buses near university districts be remodeled and provided as housing for young adults. Citing an example of used ship remodeling in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he stated that an estimated budget of around 500 billion won could cover 10,000 units. He highlighted advantages such as the possibility of various designs including mobile and trailer types, and described it as a swift temporary housing measure that could complement the pace of the government's housing supply policy.

However, as soon as the post was published, criticism poured in from the opposition, the MZ generation, and even from within the Democratic Party itself.

Lukewarm Reactions from the Ruling and Opposition Parties, and the Public The People Power Party targeted Rep. Hwang and the Lee Jae-myung administration, criticizing the policy as unrealistic. Senior Deputy Spokesperson Park Chung-kwon noted that the Amsterdam houseboat example is an extremely limited alternative based on the Netherlands' unique circumstances, and sarcastically suggested that Rep. Hwang and his family should become the first residents of a "bus house." Representative Jang Dong-hyuk and Senior Deputy Spokesperson Choi Bo-yoon also pointed out the lack of realism as a youth housing policy and the overall mismanagement of the current government's real estate policies.

Reform New Party leader Lee Jun-seok referenced trailer living in the United States, pointing out that vehicle residences are not included in official housing statistics and raising issues such as the impracticality of connecting water and sewage systems. On social media, memes mocking Rep. Hwang's proposal, such as "Hannam The Wheel," spread rapidly.

Concerns also grew within the Democratic Party. Policy Committee Chairwoman Jung-ae Han dismissed the idea as a mere happening with low feasibility, and Rep. Park Jie-won stated that a party-level warning was necessary.

Post Deleted and Official Apology Issued As the controversy escalated, Rep. Hwang deleted the post about two hours after publishing it on the 7th, explaining that it was merely an idea. However, when criticism did not subside, he even canceled a press meeting scheduled for the 10th.

On the same day, Rep. Hwang posted an apology on Facebook, stating, "It was an idea intended to bridge the gap in the government-led housing supply timeline and reduce the temporary housing cost burden for low-income young adults, but contrary to my original intention, it caused distress and disappointment to young people and the public. I bow my head and apologize." He added, "I feel a heavy responsibility for not fully appreciating the severity of the youth housing problem and for not carefully considering the feelings of the young people who are directly affected." He repeatedly pledged to listen to the realistic voices of young people and to prepare practical, high-quality housing innovation measures.

In this regard, the Democratic Party clarified that Rep. Hwang's post was his personal opinion and unrelated to the party's official stance. Policy Committee Chairwoman Jung-ae Han expressed regret for causing hurt to young people, and Rep. Hwang also reiterated his apology to the public and to young people.
