Park Jong-seo, Korea's first-generation automotive designer, will share behind-the-scenes stories of developing the nation's beloved cars along with his modest everyday life. The program is EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire,' airing on the night of the 14th.
[From the Scoupe to the Tiburon... 25 Years at Company H] The broadcast covers Park's experience designing major models — the Scoupe, Tiburon, Santa Fe, Sonata, and Avante — during his 25 years at Company H. He earned the trust of the late Chung Ju-yung, Chung Se-yung, and Chairman Chung Mong-koo across three generations of leadership, contributing to the development of Korean automotive design. Notably, he presented original designs targeting the global market in the early days of the automotive industry.
["When I First Designed This Car, the Company Was Entirely Against It"] During the development of the Tiburon, internal opposition within the company was strong. Park said, "When I first designed this car, everyone at the company opposed it," explaining that the limitations of production technology at the time were a concern. However, thanks to one engineer's challenge, the curved design was successfully realized, and the Tiburon drew great attention both at home and abroad.
The Santa Fe, Company H's first independent SUV, is also his work. At the request of the U.S. sales subsidiary, a dedicated production line was even built.
[A Dream Car Four Years in the Making... "I Even Wrote a Letter Directly to Ferrari Headquarters"] Park's long-cherished dream car collection will also be revealed on the show. Introducing a late-1950s Ferrari racing model alongside Seo Jang-hoon and Jang Ye-won, he said, "I even wrote a letter directly to Ferrari headquarters" to make it as close to the real thing as possible. The process of creating the dream car, completed through four years of effort, will also be shared.
[Driving a 26-Year-Old Car... "Without My Wife, I'd Be Penniless"] In contrast to his illustrious career, his daily life is humble. Park drives a 26-year-old car himself, and the sofa in his workshop is patched with cloth where it has holes. When asked about his salary or incentives, he answered, "I have no idea at all," and about managing money, he said, "Without my wife, I'd be penniless." His unpretentious lifestyle will also be shown.
Park Jong-seo's story airs on EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire' on Wednesday, October 14, at 9:55 p.m.
