Park Jong-seo, South Korea's first automobile designer, appears on EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire' to reveal the behind-the-scenes story of the birth of the nation's popular cars and his own philosophy of success.
Park worked at Company H for 25 years, designing numerous hit models including the Scoupe, Tiburon, Santa ○, Sonata, and Avante ○. He began his career as a television designer, but after a magazine article, he received an offer from the late Chairman Chung Se-young and joined Company H at age 33 as its first automobile designer.
At Chairman Chung's urging, he went to study at the Royal College of Art in the UK, but faced financial hardship. He ate instant bread on park benches and even drew car blueprints on trash he had collected. Recalling that time, he said, "Even the sparrows that flew over after smelling the bread—I couldn't bear to share a piece with them."
During the development of the Scoupe in 1990, Park's team of Korean designers competed against a world-renowned Italian automotive design team over the development of a car for export to the United States. In the contest, judged by American staff, Park's team won, proving the independent capabilities of Korean automobile design.
Park became the first automobile designer to rise to an executive position, and at Company H's year-end events, he received special treatment, such as sitting at the table right next to the chairman. However, he surprised those around him by saying, "I never once brought home the bonus checks I received from the company." Seo Jang-hoon and Jang Ye-won reacted with astonishment, asking, "Then where did that money go..."
The story of how Park earned the trust of successive chairmen, and the hidden stories behind his success, will be revealed on EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighbor Millionaire,' airing on October 14 at 9:55 p.m.
