The domestic stock market successfully rebounded in the session on the 16th, following the previous day's sharp decline, but with the New York stock market falling across the board on the 16th local time, attention is focused on whether the recovery trend will continue into the new week beginning on the 19th. In the domestic market, gains spread across large-cap stocks overall, but AI and semiconductor-related stocks later showed weakness in the U.S. market, making it necessary to examine sector-by-sector movements.

■ Index trends... Rebound achieved, but volatility was high

On the 16th, the KOSPI closed the regular session at 5,668.05 and the KOSDAQ at 794.78, up 2.05% and 4.46%, respectively, from the previous trading day. In both markets, all of the top 10 stocks by market capitalization rose, shifting the mood after the sharp decline on the 15th.

However, the intraday swings were too large to describe the day's trading by closing prices alone. The KOSPI climbed as high as 5,809.94 during the session but failed to hold its peak, with the day's low falling to 5,590.33—a gap of 219.61 points from the high. The KOSDAQ also hit 807.54 intraday but ended back below the 800 level. While a rebound was achieved, settling at higher price levels remains a challenge.

■ KOSPI large caps... Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electronics preferred shares surge more than 6%

Even among large caps, the pace of recovery varied. Samsung Electronics closed up 3.33% at 217,000 won, while SK Hynix rose just 0.24% to 1,265,000 won.

Among top KOSPI stocks, Hyundai Motor and Samsung Electronics preferred shares stood out. Hyundai Motor rose 6.26% to 314,000 won, and Samsung Electronics preferred shares gained 6.22% to 169,000 won. Samsung Life Insurance climbed 4.39%, while Samsung Biologics and KB Financial Group rose 3.53% and 2.30%, respectively. SK Square, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and LG Energy Solution also closed higher.

■ KOSDAQ... Alteogen up 9.60% and Samchundang Pharm up 8.46% lead gains

On the KOSDAQ, bio and semiconductor-related large caps jumped relatively sharply. Alteogen closed up 9.60% at 234,000 won, and Samchundang Pharm ended 8.46% higher at 209,000 won. Wonik IPS, Rino Industrial, and Eugentechnics each posted gains in the 5% range, while Jusung Engineering, Rainbow Robotics, and HLB joined the rally.

In contrast, EcoPro (0.87%) and EcoPro BM (0.57%) failed to match the KOSDAQ index's 4.46% rise.

■ New York stock market... Nasdaq plunges 2.15% amid steep losses in AI and semiconductor stocks

After domestic trading ended, additional pressure came from overseas markets. On the 16th (local time), the Nasdaq Composite closed down 572.99 points (2.15%) at 26,140.03 on the New York stock market. Amid concerns over debt at AI infrastructure investment companies and a surge in oil prices, AI and semiconductor-related stocks posted steep declines. The S&P 500 fell 84.62 points (1.09%) to 7,659.44, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 175.28 points (0.34%) to 52,002.41.

■ May 19 market... Large-cap semiconductor stocks' reaction is key

In the domestic market opening on the 19th, the focus is on how U.S. tech stock weakness will affect large-cap semiconductor stocks. Beyond the follow-through moves of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, it remains to be seen whether stocks that led the KOSDAQ rebound can sustain their gains. Attention is also on whether the KOSPI can recover its intraday gains and whether the KOSDAQ can re-enter the 800 level.

Rather than concluding that the recovery has taken hold after a single day of rebound, it is necessary to watch what levels the domestic indices can defend as they digest the U.S. market decline.
